Updated September 18, 2026.
➡️ The Alpehumle gas discovery well was recently announced by Aker BP ASA in the Måloy Slope area of the North Sea (PL 1153).👏 👉 The prolific Agat play, sourced by deeply-buried Jurassic source rocks (Draupne & Heather FM) in the Sogn Graben, was one of my recommended plays for the recently concluded APA 2026 licensing round.👏
➡️ This play is proudly recommended by YTF Exploration, and has been on YTF Exploration’s list of recommended plays since 2023. Since then, exploration activities have picked up in the play area. Significant developments since 2023 include –
– Several acreages have been picked up by various players, including some in very good areas.
– APA acreage area expansion eastward into shallow waters.
– 2 dry holes in 2025 (Njargasas and Horatio) supporting the idea that “trap/seal integrity” is the top critical risk as move northward within the play.
– New Viridien NVG24 seismic data provides clearer imaging of prospective intervals and indicate further prospectivity and play extension northwards.
– Latest analysis by YTF Exploration supports the extension of the play (or time-equivalent) northwards into the southern limits of the Norwegian Sea Basin.
➡️ The result of “Alpehumle” has significant implications for play extension and further prospectivity in terms of what is proven and where. “Alpehumle” prospect is located further north, away from most of the sizable discoveries in the play, which are located in the south (south of Ofelia / Grosso). The northern parts of the Måloy slope within the play are largely unproven with no sizable discoveries, unlike the south. That was one of the reasons why “Alpehumle” was on YTF Exploration’s list of wells to watch in 2026 – because of the impact of the well result on play extension to the north. Play extension to the north was one of the discussion issues that came up last year following the 2 dry holes in Njargasas and Horatio, both were located in the north.
➡️ Check my comments from last year following the results of Njargasas and Horatio (check here). The result of “Alpehumle” definitely lends support to my analysis that – the play extends northwards even though most of the discoveries are in the South (south of Grosso / Ofelia). My analysis of hydrocarbon migration and charge supports play extension further into the North. “Alpehumle” has just proven that, and I would expect more prospects to be tested in PL 1153 and in other licenses to the North. 👉 NOTE: In addition to the Agat play, Jurassic targets are also present in this play area and should be targeted. 👏
➡️ The main critical risk factors when stepping out northwards in the Agat play are “trap type” and “retainment of hydrocarbon charge”. There are different phases of rift-associated faulting and fault reactivations as you move northwards that may compromise seal integrity and impact retainment of hydrocarbons in charged traps. Hence, the need for critical work around trap mapping/timing and trap/seal integrity. 👉 NOTE: There are different ways to identify previous rift-related movements that could have compromised seal integrity (i.e. “Njargasas” prospect) – contact me if you need support. 👏
👉 Contact me if you need support for identifying and maturing the right prospects for drilling within the Agat play or if you’re looking for farm-in opportunities.👏
