The Strategic Exploration Collaboration and the Hunt for High Impact Discoveries on the NCS

Updated September 22, 2026.

➡️ A Strategic Exploration Collaboration on the NCS! 👏

➡️ The recent announcement of a Strategic Exploration Collaboration (by Equinor, AkerBP, and Vår Energi) validates everything I’ve been writing about for some time, and it’s good to see that some actions are finally being taken.👏  Whether it’s in the Barents Sea, the Norwegian Sea, or the North Sea, the drilling of the remaining high-impact, large volume wells to support standalone development and open up new areas is time-sensitive (for profitability), and requires collaboration (portfolio/expertise/capability) to share the risk involved.👏

➡️ Is this special? – Well, this is special in the sense that it is different from the regular joint venture arrangement. It is a collaboration that seeks to combine expertise, portfolio, data, technology, and exploration capacity in the exclusive hunt for high-impact wells. It’s a special collaboration,…and it needed to be. I have previously written of the need for this type collaboration – one that cuts across acreage positions / portfolio and involves sharing of expertise. **I also provided a similar feedback after the Barents Sea Exploration seminar (Oct. 2024) by the Norwegian Offshore Directorate👏 The regular joint venture strategy has not worked for various reasons… and I can share that in another post. The expected NCS production decline has been known for quite some time, but previous drilling efforts to delay the drop-off and extend the production plateau have not been productive. The 80/20 split exploration strategy that assigns 20% of wells to high-impact wells and 80% to ILX/NFW wells has corresponded to roughly 1 high-impact well per year over the past decade, and the results from those wells have not been successful or impactful. 👉Hence, the need for a change in strategy….because “you can only milk the cow for so long” (speaking of the profitability of ILX strategy vs sustainability in the long term).👏

➡️ Historic: The newspaper, Dagens Næringsliv, published the announcement on its backpage with the title – “Historisk”. Yes, this is historic for the NCS, and it needed to be. It’s great to see these “big-three” explorers come together “to do the needful”… though competitors, they’ve found the common business ground to act in the interest of the Norsk Shelf, which will ultimately lead to long term sustainability of the industry.👏

– As commented by Karl Johnny Hersvik (CEO, AkerBP)  – “The NCS still holds substantial undiscovered resources….. This is about putting our combined expertise to work where it can make the biggest difference, securing reliable energy for society, and value for our stakeholders”.👏

– As commented by @Kjetil Hove (EVP, E&P Equinor) – “By combining our expertise and exploration portfolios, we can high-grade the best opportunities, move faster and do more…..”.👏

– As commented by Nick Walker (CEO, Vår Energi) – “The NCS remains highly attractive….. This collaboration is a transformative step for the future exploration of high-impact opportunities on the NCS….”.👏

👉 As I’ve said before, this is another sign of “a healthy ecosystem” within the E&P industry on the Norsk Shelf. Congrats to Equinor, Aker BP ASA, and Vår Energi. 👏
